This Renaissance take on Jonah's emergence has little to do with medieval and early Christian versions. The figure is naked, but not to suggest Baptism as in earlier works. Rather, it is an exercise in naturalistic representation in the tradition of the pagan ancients.

Well, Jonah is naturalistic, but not the whale, or perhaps it is a fish as in the Vulgate Jonah.
